We Are All Goods

A photography series in progress on the container yards of Purfleet: the vessel, the trade, and the human inside the box.

Every day at the Purfleet station, I watch the trains move. They carry thousands of steel boxes bound for the heart of London. To the city, these are shipments. To the economist, these are goods. But to me, these containers are the modern evolution of the hold of a slave ship.

This work is a meditation on the act of transport. For centuries, the vessel has been used to move things of value. First, the stolen bodies of the Transatlantic trade, then the minerals stripped from the earth, and today, the children smuggled in secret across borders. In every instance, the logic remains the same. The human is erased and the unit is prioritized.

My own journey is layered with this irony. I came here voluntarily to study and work, yet I inhabit a landscape that feels like a monument to extraction. I live under the grey, weeping skies of the United Kingdom, which is a cold contrast to the Land of the Rising Sun from which I come. In the rain of Essex, the yellow of a sunflower or the weave of an Igbo cap are not acts of rebellion. They are a means of not losing my soul to the grind of the machine.

Now, a new erasure has begun. The arrival of AI and automation means that the human is no longer even needed to manage the trade. We are being replaced by algorithms. The worker is becoming as obsolete as the cargo.

London is the melting point of this global system. It is a city built on the arrival of these containers. By placing my culture and my grief against these steel walls, I am asking at what point the human being stops being a person and starts being a shipment.

Whether we arrive in chains, in passports, or in secret, we are all being moved through a system of trade. In the eyes of the machine, we are all goods. But inside the box, we remain human.

The five movements

The Commodity: extraction and trade. The Vessel: trafficking and trauma. The Melting Point: culture and survival. The Cost: loss and erasure. The Algorithm: AI and replacement. Twenty-five photographs, shot between Purfleet and London.
